Too Fast? Too Slow? How to Change YouTube Video Speed to Match Your Fitness Level

Your workout, your pace.
Have you ever jumped into a cardio workout and felt like it was going way too fast — or maybe a little too easy and you wanted to push harder? The great news is that YouTube gives you full control over playback speed, and it takes less than ten seconds to change. This guide walks you through exactly how to change the YouTube video speed.
*Quick tip: Every body is different. Fitness is personal — there's no shame in slowing a workout down, and no badge for keeping up when you're not ready. Meeting yourself where you are is the workout.
Our three fitness levels — find where you belong
At Improved Health, every workout is designed with three levels in mind so that no matter where you're starting from, there's always a place for you.
Gentle
Perfect if you're new to exercise, managing a health condition, have limited mobility, or simply want a low-impact session that's kind to your joints. These workouts move at a comfortable, unhurried pace.
Beginner
A step up in energy and effort, but still accessible. Great if you've done some exercise before and want to build strength and stamina gradually without feeling overwhelmed.
Intermediate
For those who are consistently active and ready to push harder. These workouts bring more intensity, faster transitions, and a bigger cardiovascular challenge.
Not sure which level is yours? Start with Gentle or Beginner — you can always work your way up. And the YouTube video playback speed trick below means you can fine-tune any video to sit exactly where you need it.
Why adjust playback speed?
Even with three dedicated levels, there's no such thing as a one-size-fits-all workout. Everyone moves through fitness differently — maybe you're on the Gentle level but having a particularly low-energy day, or you're on Beginner and starting to feel like 1x speed isn't challenging enough anymore. Playback speed lets you personalize any video beyond what the level alone can do. Keep in mind some beginner level workouts are created with music at 116 bpm, and other beginner level workouts are at 122 bpm so adjusting the speed makes sense some days.
Think of playback speed as your personal dial — it means every single video on the channel works for where you are today, not just where the level was designed for.
How to change the YouTube video speed:
Step 1
Open the settings
Click the gear icon (⚙) at the bottom-right corner of any YouTube video. On mobile, tap the three-dot menu, then "Playback speed."
Step 2
Select "Playback speed"
A menu will appear with speed options. The default is 1x (normal). Options run from 0.25x all the way up to 2x.
Step 3
Pick your pace
Choose a speed that fits how you're feeling today. You can change it mid-workout — no need to restart the video.
Step 4
Press play & move
That's it! The workout adjusts instantly. Focus on your form and listen to your body throughout.
Which speed is right for you?
Speed | Best for | What to expect |
0.75x | Beginners, injury recovery, learning new moves | Slightly slower cues — great for getting form right without pausing constantly |
0.5x | Complete beginners or those with limited mobility | Half speed gives you plenty of time to follow along and build confidence |
1x | The intended audience for each workout | Normal pacing as filmed — a good target to work toward |
1.25x | Intermediate exercisers wanting a boost | A subtle increase in intensity — slightly more cardio demand, same movements |
1.5x | Advanced fitness levels | Noticeably faster — keep form your priority and don't sacrifice quality for speed |
Tips for making the most of your adjusted workout
Start slower than you think you need to. It's much better to nail the movement pattern at 0.75x and gradually build up over a few sessions than to push through with sloppy form.
Progress week by week. Try a workout at 0.75x this week. If it feels comfortable, nudge it to 1x next week. Small, consistent progress beats big leaps followed by burnout.
Listen to how your body feels, not how the video looks. Shortness of breath, dizziness, or joint pain are signs to slow down — regardless of what speed you're on.
On mobile? The speed control lives under the three-dot menu (⋮) in the top-right corner of the video while it's playing. It works exactly the same way.
The audio changes too. YouTube automatically adjusts the pitch so voices sound normal at any speed — so the instructions and music won't sound chipmunk-fast or distorted.
The bottom line
There is no "correct" speed for a workout — only the speed that's correct for you, today. Using the playback speed feature means every single video on 'Improved Health' can work for absolute beginners and experienced exercisers alike. It's one of the most underused tools on YouTube, and now you know exactly how to use it.
So the next time you open up a 20-minute cardio workout and the pace feels off, don't give up — just hit that settings icon and make it yours.
